Plymouth Marine Labratories
The loss of Copper Biocide into the Marine Environment.
Pentland Firth Tidal Race, Orkney Islands - Plymouth Marine Laboratories Five-Year Trial Site.
Plymouth Marine Laboratories (PML) are commissioned to compare the loss of copper into the marine environment from Coppercoat Multi-Season Antifoul Coating and ablative antifouling.
Project + Year
- 2019. Plymouth Marine Laboratories (PML) are commissioned to compare the loss of copper into the marine environment from Coppercoat Multi-Season Antifoul Coating and ablative antifouling.
Project Information
- The results of the five-year independent trial conducted by PML on behalf of Rolls Royce and EDF Energy are extrapolated to determine the loss rate of each product type.
- Refer to the Rolls Royce + EDF Energy Marine Turbine Project.
Panel Substrate
- Carbon steel coated with a universal two-part epoxy anticorrosive coating
Coatings Trialled
- Coppercoat Multi-Season Antifoul Coating.
- Ablative Antifouling Paint (All major global brands).
Comparative Coating Performance
- The loss rate of Ablative Antifouling Paint was 14 times higher than Coppercoat, per day.
- Over the five-year trial period, Coppercoat lost 4.30% of coating thickness.
- Over the five-year trial period, Ablative Antifouling Paint lost 90 – 100% of coating thickness
