Marine Infrastructure

HullWell System, 10+ Years Protection & Prevention – Underwater Surface Coatings for Marine Infrastructure.

Performance

  • Coppercoat Commercial Multi-Season Antifoul Coating is internationally proven on renewable energy installations, water treatment plants, intake canals, subsea coolers, nuclear diffusers, subsea sonars, sea farms, and a myriad of marine infrastructure installations.

  • Coppercoat maintains full efficacy against fouling and protects aluminium, steel, GRP, composite and concrete substrates for up to ten times longer than traditional antifoul coatings.

  • Coppercoat eliminates the requirement for frequent maintenance and its significant associated costs e.g., lifting, transportation, underwater serving, support crews, etc. Complex subsurface components, fast or slow moving or static, are fully functional unimpeded by fouling.

  • Coppercoat maximises infrastructure outputs and economic returns.

  • Coppercoat is non-eroding, highly durable, and more resistant to abrasive and impact damage than any other antifouling product.

  • Coppercoat Commercial has a drag coefficient lower than most antifouling paints ensuring optimum performance from moving components.

  • Coppercoat is highly effective in tropical and near-freezing water, in nutrient-rich environments, at any depth, in fresh or salt water, in still water, or in extreme tidal conditions.

  • Coppercoat is unaffected by long periods out of water. It may be applied at an optimum time during infrastructure manufacture.

  • CK426 Ceramic Infused Two-Part Epoxy Anticorrosive Barrier Coating is the preferred predecessor coating for Coppercoat. The two coatings chemically fuse together creating a hard, non-porous, monolithic shell over underwater surfaces and eliminating the risk of inter-coat delamination. The typical dry-finished thickness of CK 426 and Coppercoat on marine infrastructure is 600 microns.

Economics

  • HullWell’s refined Performance + Cost Analytics software delivers key information to facilitate accurate decision-making involving underwater surface performance and protection for marine infrastructure.

  • Our Performance and Cost Analytics will demonstrate the significant performance and economic benefits of Coppercoat Commercial Multi-Season Antifoul Coating coatings arising from long efficacy, superior substrate protection, fouling prevention, durability, low drag, minimum maintenance, and minimum out-of-service durations.

Environmental Responsibility

  • Visible, effective, environmentally responsible, and sustainable practices are essential to marine infrastructure production and operation .... they speak of core values, they distinguish one entity from another, they typically enhance commercial performance, and they make our planet better.

  • Among the objectives of many infrastructure projects are sustainability, energy production with reduced or zero emissions, and preventing irreversible harm to the earth’s atmosphere and oceans. The HullWell Marine Infrastructure Coating System (DeFOUL, CK426, Coppercoat) is in perfect alignment with these objectives.

Environmental and sustainability benefits of working with HullWell and the HullWell Marine Infrastructure System:

  • Coppercoat Multi-Season Antifoul Coating is manufactured using entirely 100% recycled copper.

  • Coppercoat is solvent-free; it does not discharge VOCs into the Earth’s atmosphere. VOC discharges from solvent-based products are a primary cause of ozone depletion and ocean warming.

  • Coppercoat Multi-Season Antifoul Coating is non-eroding and does not leech biocides, toxins, silicon, or plastics into the marine environment. These compounds are destructive to sea life and ocean health.

  • The minimal maintenance requirements and long efficacy of the HullWell Marine Infrastructure System reduce emissions associated with the regular replacement and frequent maintenance required of traditional underwater surface coatings.

  • The HullWell system produces no end-of-life waste.

Case Studies

Rolls Royce + EDF Energy Marine Turbine Generator Project

“Rolls Royce and EDF Energy commissioned the longest antifoul coating trial of its kind to quantify marine coating performance. After two years, Coppercoat was in the top two for preventing fouling and substrate damage.

After five years, Coppercoat was the best-performing coating, outright. At the completion of the trial, Coppercoat had lost 4.30% of its thickness whereas ablative antifouling coatings had eroded 90 to 100% of their biocide content into the marine environment”.

Plymouth Marine Laboratories - The Loss of Copper Biocide into the Marine Environment

Plymouth Marine Laboratories (PML) are commissioned to compare the loss of copper into the marine environment from Coppercoat Multi-Season Antifoul Coating and ablative antifouling.
